Computech Bridges Transition Between Legacy COBOL and Replacement Systems

In this Federal Computer News article, author Brian Robinson highlights that while agencies are moving towards replacing their 50-year old legacy Common Business-Oriented Language (COBOL) systems, migration from the legacy systems to the replacement Java systems will not happen over night. Solution? Computech has in place a 3-step transition: 1) identifying the technical requirements for the new Java-based systems; 2) upgrading and maintaining the COBOL system while the new version is being built; and 3) providing a phased transition to test the replacement systems – until all are confident the COBOL system can be retired. And of course, no job is too big – Computech has successfully moved a 7 million-line COBOL system to one based on Java in a phased transition for Customs and Border Protection.
