DC Beautification Day
For the third year in a row Computech participated in DC Beautification Day. This is an opportunity for thousands of volunteers to assist the DC schools in their final preparations before the start of the new school year. At 8:00 Saturday morning, August 21, twenty-one hardy cleaner uppers arrived at Malcolm X Elementary School in Anacostia with shovels, pruning shears, trowels, hedge clippers, and paint brushes ready to take on their assignments. This year Computech had the pleasure of teaming with staff from the DC Mayor’s Office of Volunteerism for the event. We even worked alongside a local celebrity – Miss Teen DC!
The day was a very humid 90+ degrees, but the weather did not deter us from our tasks. The site supervisor separated us into groups who focused on painting trim in the main entrance and the front hallway, planting flowers and trimming bushes, and picking up trash (and, boy, was there a lot of that!). We spent the next five hours diligently working on our assignments, with the occasional break to admire praying mantis, chat with passersby and each other, and gulp down water to stay hydrated. By the time we finished, the painters were splattered in bright yellow and red paint, the gardeners were covered in dirt, and the trash picker-uppers had sore backs, but our hard work was quite evident. No one managed to fall off any ladders, cut themselves on the shards of glass and crab shells, or get paint in their eyes.
Just to add to the success of the day, we watched the painting of a beautiful mural (wish we had been able to see the finished product, but what we saw was fabulous) and wound up on video that was shown on the 6:00PM news that evening on Channel 4. Principal Darwin Bobbitt was very grateful for all our hard work.
All in all, it was a great day. As with other Computech Cares events, it is a wonderful experience to see people give up their personal time to give back to the community. Check out some great pics on our Facebook page!

A letter of thanks
For more than 30 years, our core values of commitment, teamwork and integrity have allowed us to help our clients succeed. These same values extend to our community involvement; in fact, Computech donated approximately $500,000 to worthy organizations in 2009 – with numerous staff volunteering their time and energies at local charities and non-profits.
Through our “Computech Cares” efforts, we help support local communities through volunteer endeavors, financial support and partnerships with nonprofit organizations. One of the wonderful charities we help, the Little Sisters of the Poor, recently wrote to express their thanks for our continuing support — and donation of tickets to the Disney on Ice production at the Verizon Center. An except from their letter:
“On behalf of the residents, staff, volunteers and Sisters of the Jeanne Jugan Residence of the Little Sisters Of The Poor in Washington, D.C. who attended the Disney On Ice production at the Verizon Center on 2/13/10, we would like to thank J.D. Murphy, and everyone at Computech who made this wonderful outing possible!
Despite the snowy roads and cold temperatures, on February 13th, 17 participants from the Little Sisters Of The Poor and the Josephites Home, ventured out to see the Disney On Ice production. Many had never visited the Verizon Center, much less had such a wonderful, private viewing area, like the Computech Suite! The residents, volunteers, staff, and Sisters were in awe of this magical production of familiar Disney characters… Again, please accept our immense gratitude for a wonderful day! God bless everyone for sharing these tickets with the residents, volunteers, staff and Sisters.”
About the Little Sisters of the Poor:
Caring for the elderly poor throughout the world, the Little Sisters’ D.C. “chapter” houses more than one hundred residents from twenty different countries. Their homes are open to needy seniors 60 years and older, and they welcome the elderly regardless of race, religion or national origin. As Little Sisters, they profess vows of chastity, poverty, obedience – and a special 4th vow of hospitality.

Computech SHAREs
This past Saturday, over 40 Computech’ers braved 28 degree weather as volunteers at the SHARE Food Network’s distribution center in Prince George’s County. We’ve posted full coverage of our experiences in a variety of places; most notably, our Concomitantly blog, YouTube Channel and Facebook page. When you have a few minutes, take a look at our “Computech Cares” team in action.

Computech SHAREs
A quick thank you to everyone who participated in our early Saturday morning Computech Cares event this past weekend. As many of you know, we had the privilege of volunteering at the SHARE Food Network’s distribution center a few miles outside of DC, in Hyattsville, Maryland.
As our CEO, J.D. Murphy, wrote yesterday to all staff, “arriving at the warehouse and seeing your teammates learn the processes and then carry out their assigned tasks with humor and cheer brought a smile to many faces. Indeed, while cold and dreary, I heard several comments including “…we should do this again” and ” I’m glad to be here helping.” So what did we accomplish? Quite a lot in a six hour time frame: We moved carton after carton from the loading area to the distribution tables. We distributed and packaged frozen Perdue chicken, fozen tillapia, fresh lettuce, apples, oranges, carrots, onions, and potatoes some 18 items all told. And, we loaded cars, vans and trucks with all of the distributed food. Additionally and importantly we met with and assisted the many individuals who were their to pick-up the goods from Project Share. We interacted with individuals from different churches, representing a variety of faiths, and others like the Knights of Columbus that regularly come Project Share to fulfill the needs of others. It was a great day — one we look forward to repeating next quarter.
